QUEENS’ MARKETPLACE | CELEBRATING 10 YEARS 9 (mountain) side of Queens’ MarketPlace. On the makai side, near the now-iconic “town clock” and fountain, the anchor store Island Gourmet Markets offered variety from island produce, sushi, sweets and sandwiches, to a cool little wine bar tucked in a corner. The grand opening celebration was a four-day event that began with a traditional blessing by Kahu Danny Kaniela Akaka, and continued with award-winning Hawaiian music and hula, Makahiki festivities, and a spectacular orchid drop by helicopter. Fashionable guests at the Princess Kai‘ulani Champagne Brunch were able to see replicas of Monarchy-era gowns, and later a runway show featuring the center’s new tenants. Pahoa’s Hiccup Circus delighted the crowd with clowns, jugglers, unicycles and stilt-walkers. Beloved music legend, the late Braddah Smitty, shared his special blend of aloha. Today, Queens’ MarketPlace continues to share the fun with everyone, hosting some of the best festivals and events on the island, most of them free to the public. In February, Asian Fest sizzles with foods of the Far East, high-energy Lion Dancers and Taiko drums. March brings spectacular talent from around Hawai‘i and beyond for ‘Ukulele Festival. The Fourth of July lights up the sky with fireworks and music after a day filled with carnival-style activities, and during the holidays, Santa makes Queens’ MarketPlace a long stopover to visit keiki before the big night. In addition, free monthly concerts, movies, hula performances and special events help Queens’ MarketPlace exceed expectations as an entertaining, energetic and delicious gathering place on the Kohala Coast. After 10 years, this growing ‘ohana of shops, services, activities and restaurants — soon to include the island’s very first luxury cinema — looks forward with excitement to the decades ahead.
