Simply put, Ippy’s Hawaiian BBQ and Queens’ MarketPlace are a match made in Hawaiian heaven. The popular eatery puts its own local fare on barbecue, and owner Philip “Ippy” Aiona can’t think of a better spot than the retail hub to serve up their landmark lunch plates. That’s because Queens’ has established itself as the go-to spot for locals and visitors looking for culture-based entertainment — from hula shows, local musicians, to events highlighting life on the islands and local grindz. QUEENS’ MARKETPLACE | CELEBRATING 10 YEARS “We love being the MarketPlace,” said Ippy’s father and co-owner, Max Aiona. Ippy grew up in the restaurant business, learning from New York- Italian and Hawaiian parents, before he finished as a finalist on “Food Network Star” during its eighth season. “Queens’ MarketPlace makes people feel like they should be there celebrating all there is about the Big Island,” Max said. “A wide variety of shops, restaurants and entertainment are offered for the whole family.” The restaurant, which has been in Queens’ for nearly five years, specializes in brined rotisserie chicken basted in homemade teriyaki sauce, furikake mahi burger, miso fried chicken and more. Fittingly, its theme is to serve up plate lunches the right way — with aloha. “You can ‘taste the aloha’ in all of our dishes,” Max said. And being able to serve up those dishes in one of South Kohala’s more popular venues helps spread aloha all the more. “The highlights are meeting people from all over the world and having them try dishes they haven’t eaten before and falling in love with it,” he said.
