WEST HAWAII TODAY | BIG ISLAND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 2017 | 3 FINAL INSTALLMENT Kahilu Theatre concludes Steinway Series with concert pianist Mark Salman The Kahilu Steinway Series wraps up next Friday with a performance by Mark Salman in Waimea. Hailed as a “heroic virtuoso,” and “a dazzling performer,” Salman’s performances have been described as “powerful,” “astonishing, exacting and evocative,” “dramatic,” “wildly imaginative” and “touchingly lyrical.” He has toured Europe, Asia, Canada, and throughout the United States. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City, has been the subject of profiles in The New York Times and has been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts in the U.S., Europe and in China. Salman is regularly heard as a concerto soloist with northwest orchestras, having performed more thirty different concertos with orchestras. As a chamber musician, he appears regularly with Simple Measures. He is a Steinway artist and is on the faculty of the Seattle Conservatory of Music. Besides his wide-ranging repertoire, Salman is perhaps best known for his expertise on Ludwig van Beethoven, having performed the complete cycle of the 32 piano sonatas on both coasts as well as in 18 broadcasts on KING-FM in Seattle. Salman is a native of Connecticut, where he began his studies at the age of 8 and made his recital debut at 11. A graduate of The Juilliard School, he studied with Richard Fabre and Josef Raieff. He previously attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for two years, where he concentrated on chamber music and composition, studying with the noted composer, John Harbison. The program for the April 14 show at Kahilu Theatre will include Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 14 by Felix Mendelssohn, Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor “Tempest” by Beethoven, 3 Mazurkas and Polonaise in F# minor, Op. 44 by Frederic Chopin, Valse Oubliee No. 1 and Ballade in B minor by Franz Liszt. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. performance. In the Kahilu Galleries, a “Climate of Change Juried Exhibit” will be on display in the Kohala Gallery, and “Dance of the Bees – The Exhibit” will be on display in the Hamakua Gallery. The Kahilu Steinway Series is a series of performances showcasing Kahilu Theatre’s Model D Steinway Concert Grand piano at accessible ticket prices. Entry is free to those younger than 18.
