This collection wades into life’s messiness and compels readers to ponder difficult but familiar foibles of human life. “If you see yourself in this eclectic mix, be ready to squirm,” she said. Whom might readers recognize? The perfectionist, the pampered, the introvert, the grieved, the critic, and more. The book follows publication of “The Painted Table,” a novel about shedding baggage from a childhood marked by family mental illness, in 2013. Field’s books are available for purchase at www.amazon.com. Book sale benefits Kona libraries The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Fiction book club meets Tuesday Kona Stories hosts a fiction book club discussing “The Widow” by Fiona Barton on Tuesday. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the store. Book groups are free if books are purchased at Kona Stories, or a $5 donation is requested. Following the twists and turns of an unimaginable crime, “The Widow” is an electrifying debut thriller that will take you into the dark spaces that exist between a husband and a wife. There’s a lot Jean hasn’t said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment. Now her husband is dead, and there’s no reason to stay quiet. The truth — that’s all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything. Barton trains and works with journalists all over the world. Previously, she was a senior writer at the Daily Mail, news editor at the Daily Telegraph, and chief reporter at the Mail on Sunday, where she won Reporter of the Year at the British Press Awards. The Widow is her first novel, and she’s working on her second. Info: Brenda or Joy, 324-0350, www.konastories.com.
