A 2014 estimate figured that the isle’s population grew to 194,190, representing 13.7 percent of the state’s total estimated population of more than 1.4 million people. Children younger than 5 years old made up 6.3 percent of the island’s population in 2013, while children younger than 18 constituted 22.2 percent of the total population. People older than 65, meanwhile, represented 16.8 percent. Hawaii County’s racial breakdown sat at 34.4 percent white, 22.1 percent Asian, 12.7 percent Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islander, 29.5 percent two or more races, 12.2 percent Hispanic or Latino, 0.8 percent black or African-American, and 0.6 percent American Indian/Alaska Native. Between 2009 and 2013, foreign-born people represented 10.9 percent of the population. More than 90 percent of the Big Island’s citizenry were high school graduates during that five-year period, while more than a quarter of them had bachelor’s degrees or higher. The home ownership rate during those years stood at 65.7 percent, with the median value of owner-occupied housing standing at $309,800 between 2009 and 2013. Meanwhile, the median home value across the state was $503,100. The Big Island claims the cheapest land values in the state, drawing retirees in droves to fast-growing areas such as the Puna District, which includes Hawaiian Ocean View Estates. Covering 18 square miles with more than 157 miles of privately paved roadways and about 11,500 1-acre parcels, it is the country’s largest subdivision, according to the website of the neighborhood’s road maintenance corporation at hoveroad.com.
