How do I register a car or get a driver’s license? If you move to Hawaii Island from another state, from another Hawaiian island or if you buy a new vehicle in Hawaii, you will need to register the vehicle with the Hawaii Department of Transportation and Hawaii County. New Residents • If you moved to Hawaii, you must register your car within 30 days. Unlike many other states, Hawaii requires no emissions inspection. However, annual safety inspections are required and must be passed to obtain registration. Vehicles can be taken to approved service stations, which will ask to see your current vehicle registration and proof of Hawaii car insurance. Upon passing the safety inspection, drivers will be given an inspection certificate and results will be sent to the DMV. Once that is complete, you can visit the county’s motor vehicle registration offices in: HILO Motor Vehicle Registration 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 5, Hilo, HI 96720 PHONE: (808) 961-8351 HOURS: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday KONA Motor Vehicle Registration West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Building C, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740 PHONE: (808) 323-4818 HOURS: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday PAHOA Motor Vehicle Registration 15-2615 Keaau-Pahoa Road, Pahoa, HI 96778 PHONE: (808) 965-2721 HOURS: 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday Once there, you must submit: • A completed application for registration of a motor vehicle, a link for which can be found at www. hawaiicounty.gov/finance-vrl. • The most recent out-of-state certificate of vehicle registration. • The out of state title. • A shipping receipt or bill of lading documenting the date of the vehicle’s arrival. • A Hawaii certificate of safety inspection. • Proof of your vehicle’s weight by the manufacturer. • A Motor Vehicle Use Tax Certification form (G-27). • Payment for all registration fees.
