2 Sunday, September 13, 2015 EAST HAWAII F.A.Q. BOOK Hawaii Tribune-Herald It’s called the Big Island. But how big is it? Here are some facts: ● Hawaii Island is 93 miles wide and 4,028 square miles — larger than the other Hawaiian Islands combined. The Puna District alone is larger than the entire island of Kauai. The Big Island even is bigger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined, and is the largest island in the United States. ● The island encompasses more than 2.5 million acres. In terms of land use, that includes about 54,000 acres of urban land, 1.3 million acres of conservation land, 1.2 million acres of agricultural land and 2,000 acres classified as rural. ● Fittingly, Hawaii Island is home to Mauna Kea, which is the largest mountain on Earth: Its summit stands 13,796 feet above sea level, and rises more than 32,000 feet from its base on the ocean floor, making it taller than Mount Everest. ● Mauna Kea’s sister volcano, Mauna Loa, is the most massive mountain in the world, covering half the island.
