DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION The state Department of Education is the administrative organization of the state’s school system. As of April 2013, Hawaii’s was the ninth largest school system in the nation, serving approximately 183,251 students in grades K-12. As of the 2014-15 academic year, the Hawaii school district serves students at a total of 290 schools, including 256 Department of Educationoperated public schools, and 34 charter schools. The Board of Education hires a superintendent of education as the chief executive officer of the public school system, and the state librarian. The superintendent appoints four assistant superintendents to run statelevel offices responsible for curriculum, instruction and student support; human resources; business services; and information technology services. The superintendent also appoints 15 complex area superintendents who each oversees and supports two to four school complexes. Each complex consists of a high school and the elementary and intermediate/ middle schools that feed into it. The complex area superintendents are based in administrative offices located in seven geographical districts: Honolulu, Central, Leeward and Windward on Oahu; and Hawaii, Maui (including Molokai and Lanai) and Kauai (including Niihau). The Big Island has three complex areas: Honokaa-Kealakehe-Kohala-Konawaena to the west; Hilo-Waiakea in the east; and Ka‘u-Keaau- Pahoa to the south.
