Lava-rock pillars and panedglass
windows are a recurring
architectural theme at Bide-AWee.
The home sits on 13 acres in
the heart of Volcano Village.
At Bide-A-Wee, Kennedy and his
wife, Laura, welcomed important
dignitaries of the era including
U.S. senators, as well as Queen
Lili‘uokalani. After Laura visited
Japan in 1914, she returned home
to Bide-A-Wee and embarked on
creating a stylized garden inspired by
the beautiful gardens she admired
in Japan. She enlisted the services
of a Japanese gardener from Kyoto,
named Yamamoto, whom she
subsequently introduced to Queen
Lili‘uokalani for the purpose of
transforming a bayside parcel in Hilo
into the now-famous Lili‘uokalani
Gardens beginning in 1917. Although
the queen didn’t live to see her
namesake park completed in 1919,
it was Laura’s friendship with the
queen that played an integral part in
its inception.
Miles of horseback riding trails
meander through the Bide-AWee
property, which includes a
horse stable, stalls and tack room.
Replete with Kennedy’s original
heirlooms and antiques, the Bide-
A-Wee estate, totaling 1,965 square
feet of living space, has been
lovingly restored by its current
owner and includes a separate
guesthouse and standalone art
studio. The property is currently
on the market.
