Karen Anderson/ Special to West Hawaii Today Fumi’s Kitchen Serves Comfort Food With a Twist Fumi’s Kitchen, located on Alii Drive behind Lava Java, serves Japanese and Korean fusion cuisine inspired by Chef/Proprietor Ronnie Ow’s culinary upbringing in Kona. A member of the famous Teshima family, Ronnie is the steward of his family’s favorite recipes from the landmark restaurant in Honalo. Opening his own version of Teshima’s Restaurant in downtown Kailua-Kona two years ago, Ronnie is carrying out the legacy that his grandmother began back in 1929 and that his mother, Fumi, continued throughout her lifetime as well. According to Ronnie, the most popular item at Fumi’s Kitchen is the Shrimp Tempura Combo Tray No. 5 served with choice of pork, yakitori, sukiyaki and more. Also on the menu are bento boxes, noodle dishes, saimin BBQ sticks, sandwiches, burgers, New York steak, Kalbi ribeye and spicy Korean beef stew. Fumi’s cooks up delicious appetizers as well, including the savory charred miso eggplant, baked mussels, and shiso clams cooked in sake, butter and seasoned cream sauce. Always experimenting with new and exciting dishes, Ronnie is currently perfecting his recipe for Japanese pumpkin cheesecake, which will soon be making an appearance on the Fumi’s Kitchen menu.
