Did you know that every day our Food and Nutrition Services department
prepares and serves between 900 and 1,000 meals? That’s why it was so
important for Hilo Medical Center to invest $1.6 million in the kitchen
renovation project. Already two large walk-in freezers were installed with
neighboring refrigerator rooms and a thaw room currently under construction.
In addition, cooking stations and tray lines dedicated to supplying room service
were established, bringing greater efficiencies to this patient amenity.
Hilo Medical Center’s renovation and
upgrade of the Imaging Department
advanced with the installation of
a second 160-slice CT scanner to
complement the state-of-the-art
540-slice CT scanner. The 160-slice
CT scanner also has capabilities to
perform CT simulation, a process used
by our radiation therapy team at the
Hawaii Pacific Oncology Center to
determine the exact location, shape,
and size of the tumor to be treated.
Improving access to cardiac care
In addition to opening the Hawaii Island Family Health Center on the main
floor of the hospital, Hilo Medical Center’s Cardiology Clinic opened last
November. Cardiologists and staff have been busy providing vital cardiac care to
the community in the 3,500-square-foot space, consisting of five exam rooms.
The clinic is just steps away from the Imaging Department and Laboratory.
Last year, Hilo Medical Center opened the Reflection Room located right
outside the Intensive Care Unit on the second floor. Volunteer chaplains
gathered to bless this comfortable, quiet space that provides our patients’ loved
ones a place to gather and take a moment to discuss patient care plans. Access
to the Reflection Room is granted by asking any member of our staff.
