the class of 2021
In June, the Hawaii Island Family
Medicine Residency Program (HIFMR)
graduated its second class of residents: Dr.
Will Chapple, Dr. Unity Nguyen and Dr.
Gaku Yamaguchi. This summer, residents of
the class of 2021, Dr. Henry Cho, Dr. Anna
Maisu, Dr. Antoinette Moore, Dr. Deanne
Higa, Dr. Katelyn Steele and Dr. Alain
Takane, joined the residency program.
“I’m really excited about the new
class of residents,” said Dr. Mary K.
Nordling, HIFMR Program Director.
“As our residency program continues
to mature, our residents and faculty are
providing high quality health care to
more and more people of East Hawaii.
We appreciate everyone’s hard work and
support for our residency program.”
During the July 18 grand opening of the
new Hawaii Island Family Health Center,
Dan Brinkman, East Hawaii Regional CEO
of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation,
summarized the momentous occasion when
he said in his welcome speech, “Three key
elements are needed to make this vision
achievable. People, program and place . . .
The pieces have all come together thanks
to the support and generosity of you all.”
A large crowd of supporters consisting
of community members, businesses,
legislators, health care providers
and partners and hospital employees
gathered to celebrate the opening
of the 20-room medical home.
Our health center cares for 4,600
patients from keiki to kupuna and trains
future Family Medicine physicians along
with nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists,
psychologists and pediatricians. Its
new location, just steps in from the main
entrance of the hospital, improves access
to primary health care, with laboratory and
imaging services on the same floor. Under
development at the health center are telehealth
services and the eventual addition
of an outpatient pharmacy in the lobby.
