6 Caring for West Hawaii’s Ohana Since 2005 WEST HAWAII COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER Dream to Reality – Kealakehe As we celebrate the Grand Opening of our newest and largest health care facility, unveiled this summer in Kealakehe, West Hawaii Community Health Center is on a mission: to bring health care to all of Hawaii’s people, regardless of their ability to pay. With the new 10,500 sq. ft. center now open, and serving the community, residents from South Kohala to north Ka’u have even more options when it comes to accessing quality, compassionate and dependable medical, dental and behavioral health services. Amid much excitement, the Grand Opening of the beautiful stateof the-art Kealakehe facility on July 13, 2015 coincided with the 10th anniversary of West Hawaii Community Health Center. On this meaningful occasion, WHCHC also marked the 50th anniversary of community health centers in the United States. Since the fi rst centers opened in Boston and Mississippi in 1965, more than 1,300 community health centers in the U.S. have grown to become sterling examples of how local communities are making a difference in the lives of so many people. Thanks to a $5 million grant in federal HRSA funds, a $3.8 million award from New Market Tax Credits, and the generous support of foundations and countless individuals, WHCHC built a facility that will serve our growing population well into the future. Situated on four acres of a larger twenty-six acre parcel, leased to La’i’Opua 2020 by the Department of Hawaiian Homelands, West Hawaii Community Health Center is the fi rst increment of the future La‘i ‘Opua Community Center Complex As the celebration continues of this momentous achievement, West Hawaii Community Health Center is looking forward, with great optimism, toward the future in continuing to expand health care services to provide the people of West Hawaii the fi nest health care services available for optimum care.
