Proudly serving Hawaiian Home Lands since 1998. 2002 2003 2004 Timeline 2005 2006 Efforts begin to create a West Hawaii Community Health Center (WHCHC) WHCHC incorporates WHCHC applies to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) WHCHC opens, treating 905 patients in 2,200 visits FQHC status granted 2007 Expansion from 3 to 7 examining rooms Behavioral Health services begin 2008 Kealakekua medical and behavioral health services for keiki opens Similar to the founding of the nation’s fi rst community health center in 1965, West Hawaii Community Health Center (WHCHC) started from humble beginnings by a grassroots community effort in 2002. It is an amazing story of a community coming together to bring much needed health care to the people in West Hawaii, especially those without health insurance or the ability to pay for care. Up until then, the Salvation Army of Kona had provided limited medical services to the underserved population. With an 80-mile span of geographic region to cover, and a growing population, transportation was, and still is, a major hurdle for those in need of health care. It was this and other obstacles that inspired a small group of concerned citizens to form a board of directors to bring health care to West Hawaii. Over the course of the year and with naysayers saying “it couldn’t be done”, the board prevailed and successfully secured 501(c)(3) nonprofi t status for WHCHC. The doors opened in January 2005 to a multitude of people needing medical attention. The task was daunting – our tenacity steadfast.
