WEST HAWAII TODAY | BIG ISLAND ENTERTAINMENT SCENE FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2016 | 5 Big Island artist illustrates four children’s books A handful of books illustrated by Big Island artist Jing Jing Tsong were released last month. BeachHouse Publishing announced in August the new series of children’s books “Hawaiian Legends for Little Ones” that introduces keiki to Hawaii’s rich world of legends and myths. The four publications were written by Gabrielle Ahulii in simple, poetic language that gives small kids a taste of Hawaii’s rich history of storytelling. They are geared to keiki ages 0-4. “Hina” introduces kids to one of Hawaii’s best-known deities, the goddess of the moon. “Pele Finds a Home” introduces kids to the volcano goddess, Pele, whose power is still on view today on Hawaii Island where Kilauea continues to erupt. “Naupaka” explains why the native plant blooms only half a flower. Lastly, “Maui Hooks the Islands” tells the story of Maui, the demigod who fished up the Hawaiian islands using a magic fishing hook. Info: www.beachhousepublishing.com. In “Pele the Volcano Goddess,” Varez retells 24 legends of Pele and illustrates each with an intricate black-andwhite block print, leaving all the space between the lines for the readers to fill. The coloring book contains stories of Pele and various native plants, such as how Pele dispersed the hala tree throughout the islands in a fit of rage and how she separated two lovers by turning them into mountain and lowland naupaka bushes. There are also tales of the many lovers of Pele, such as the handsome Kauai chief, Lohiau, and of her rivalries with her sister, Hiiaka, and the snow goddess, Poliahu, among others.
