Jazz Mele performs at Hilo Elks Club The Hilo Hep Cats Swing Dance club invites you to Swinging Saturday featuring the Jazz Mele band in a rare performance at the Hilo Elks Club. Jazz Mele will play your favorite jump blues, swing, jazz standards, Latin and other great dance music upstairs at 150 Kinoole St. in downtown Hilo. Beginner lessons start at 7 p.m. with dancing from 8-10 p.m. Entry is $10-$20; or bring a pupu and get in for $5. Kids 12 and under are free. Long-time jazz vocalist and band leader Lou Ann Gurney organizes and leads Jazz Mele. She assembles some of the best musicians on the island to insure that audiences have a superior listening and dancing experience. Saxophonist Robin Jensen is an exceptional player who expresses unique musical ideas and sounds like no other. She’s been playing saxophone since elementary school, in part because she comes from a musical family. While growing up in Germany, Alex Czerny learned to play piano from his father, a professional musician. He’s outstanding in many styles including jazz and tango. Alex works also as a piano tuner/technician. By day Loren Antolik is a mild-mannered computer specialist with the U.S. Geological Survey at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, but he handily exchanges that role to become a top-notch guitarist and bassist in the evening. Noa Eads has loved to play drums since he was 2 years old. He’s a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and also of Gary Washburn’s Honokaa High School jazz music program. He currently teaches that very program while Washburn is on sabbatical. Info: 982-6012. ‘Liliuokalani at Washington Place’ performed Tuesday Jackie Pualani Johnson performs an amazing, onewoman show taken directly from the writings of Queen Liliuokalani, the queens family, and other historical sources Tuesday in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Part of the ongoing After Dark in the Park series, the performance is free. Show starts at 7 p.m. at Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium. Info: 985-6000. Chicken Skin Obake Stories returns to Big Island Master story teller, kumu and actor Lopaka Kapanui takes the stage for two shows at Kilauea Theatre within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hear tales of true ghost stores from around Hawaii live in the perfect ghost story telling venue of the theater at Kilauea Military Camp during “Chicken Skin: Obake ‘Ghost’ Stories.” Show times are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 and 8. Awards & accolades McClure earns People’s Choice Award Frank McClure received top honors in the sixth annual Biennial Abstract Only! Exhibit held during August at Wailoa Center in Hilo. He earned the People’s Choice Award for his sculpture, “Lives,” carved out of Cuban mahogany. The Abstract Only! Exhibit will now be held annually instead of every other year and is sponsored by the nonprofit, Hawaii Island Art Alliance and the Wailoa Center. It’s next planned for August 2017 when Wailoa Center will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Wailoa Center is free and open to the public 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Director Engela Edwards is seeking a cast of two men and three women for the primary roles, and Photographer to share stories, photos Renowned Hawaii photographer and biologist Jack Jeffrey shares personal stories and amazing photos of native island birds in their hard-toreach habits during two presentations early next week. Jeffrey will present “The Joys — and Challenges — of Native Bird Photography in Hawaii” from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday and from 3-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lyman Museum in Hilo.
