What specific areas must the
county focus on to better balance
the budget every year?
We all have concerns on what
would be affected in both the
short- and long-term plans for
our budget. We have to be able to
spend prudently and efficiently
within all departments. I think that
we need to consider cutting all
discretionary funds and every year
when the budget is introduced we
need to run through individual
programs and departments to
cut unnecessary costs. We also
need to find a balance where we
can continue to provide services
to the community while working
within budget allowances.
What’s the most pressing issue
facing the county?
Housing - this includes being able
to provide short-term housing for
our homeless, as well as long-term
low-income housing. I support
the concept of Camp Kikaha
and am proud of the work our
County has done thus far. As for
providing shelters to ‘Village 9’ in
La‘iopua, we should consider the
lower portion of village 9 for the
utilization of shelters. To provide
low income families housing,
places like Ulu Wini are a tangible
success for low-income families
and should be considered for
future housing.
What should the county focus on
as it shifts to long-term recovery
from the Kilauea eruption?
It’s heartbreaking to witness the
on-going devastation in Puna.
There’s a multitude of areas of
focus that need to be addressed
in the long-term recovery plan.
I believe that our County needs
to work with other government
agencies to transition evacuees
out of shelters into more
permanent housing. We also
need to focus on rebuilding the
tourism economy by providing a
public viewing site. This would
help boost income to the eruption
area which in return provides
employment opportunities.

Besides tourism, what economic
driver should Hawaii focus on
to diversify and strengthen the
economy?
There are opportunities for small
businesses to flourish on our
island. Government can play a
role in the encouragement of
entrepreneurship and growth
of small businesses to meet
the demand for safe water,
renewable energy, value-added
food production, locally grown
food, upgrades to wastewater
treatment, health care services,
social services, outdoor
recreation, forestry, creative arts,
research and innovation. We can
find our niche in manufacturing.
Why should people vote for you
over the competition?
I have been making the hard
decisions and been a strong voice
for our district. I have listened and
got results. Google Representative
Cindy Evans and you will see
many of my accomplishments
and see I have been bringing
funds home for the benefit of our
district.
I am passionate and committed to
achieve results that address many
pressing issues such as housing,
food security, economic stability
and public safety. I believe I
can be more effective than my
competitor. Currently I serve as
Chair of Economic Development
and Business and have served
as Chair of Water and Land,
and Chair of Public Safety
and Military Affairs.
What’s the number one issue
facing the state and West Hawaii
right now?
Demographers continue to remind
us of the aging of our population
and the shrinking percentage
of those we can tax. Everyday
we can see costs are escalating
for response and recovery from
natural disasters. Given these
facts, we need to be vigilant in
building a diverse, resilient and
future economy.
