Traditions, past and present, take hold during the holidays
here’s no place like home
for the holidays, especially
when home is right here on
Hawai‘i Island.
Hulihe‘e Palace will be the site Wilhelmina’s
Christmas Tea, to take place on the
oceanfront lanai on Monday, December
17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Guests will be
treated to stories of Old Hawai‘i, including
remembrances of Wilhelmina Kanaina
Kamaileilanikehukaiopuna Rose Weight, who
was the first female pa‘u rider to represent
the Territory of Hawai‘i in the Los Angeles
Floral Parade, known today as the Rose
Parade. The cost is $75 per person. Call 808-

Throughout the season, island culture is
refl ected in everything from wreaths made
with pukeawe berries to pies made with ohelo
berries. A mountain trek in search of wreathmaking
materials can yield such treasures as
mounds of moss or plentiful palapalai fern. The
next best thing to holly, pukeawe berries adorn
island wreaths. Other exotic touches include
seedpods, protea, or the coconut rose found on
the stem of a coconut tree.
