Shirley Wagner of Fine Design Interiors, she
outfitted the kitchen with leather-finish granite
from Hawai‘i Stone in Kailua-Kona, along with
cabinets from Home Depot she had reconfigured
with glass panels. For the prep island, she hired her
multi-talented friend, Gary Shepard, to paint the
oak cabinets white and put glass in them.
“I like to be able to see things that I use every
day,” said Pattie, whose jewel-tone glassware are
in full view inside her cabinets. “I try to make
everything pretty.”
Pattie wondered where to put her enormous
four-poster bed, as it would very much overpower
any one of the home’s three small bedrooms.
Her daughter Jodi, who grew up in Hawai‘i,
suggested the concept of the pune‘e, or day bed.
Interestingly, the four-poster bed makes the perfect
pune‘e for the living room, at the same time
delineating space for a meditation alcove on one
side and a sitting area on the other.
Pattie works in her garden every morning savoring
the beautiful views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa
from her backyard. After expanding the concrete
slab, Pattie converted the patio into an oasis for
entertaining. Most all the furniture she owns has been
up-cycled or repurposed from second-hand sources,
like the swivel-and-glide wicker chairs she found at
the Habitat For Humanity Re-Store in Waimea.
“I’m the original recycler,” she said. “I’m always
looking for deals.”
For Pattie, living in Kawaihae brings her much
joy. The peaceful surroundings fit her busy yet
chill lifestyle, with her office and clients just a few
minutes away.
“Even though it was hard to let go of the big
house, this place is perfect for me. It’s my little
sanctuary. I can even sit outside at night and
look at the moon.”
