tips that can save homeowners money, time and
the potential regret of a nightmare scenario.
Conversely, Brett says that the client also has to
take responsibility to communicate effectively with
their contractor. It’s important to cultivate good
relationships so that everyone is on the same team.
“Problems come up and things happen,” he said.
“A good contractor is committed to working with
you through the challenges.”
Having designed and built his own house in
Waimea 18 years ago, Brett has worked on many
and varied projects through the years through
his Waimea-based firm, Kennelly, Watanabe &
Associates. He recently won an Award of Merit
from the Building Industry of Hawai‘i for a
beautiful remodel of a vintage country cottage in
Waimea, along with local interior designer Sue
Moss, who was part of the team.
As his book points out, educating yourself
with specialized knowledge is the key to
making informed decisions before you embark
on any big project. Even if you’ve found the
right person for the job, Brett’s step-by-step
guide offers insights on how to develop a
win-win relationship with your contractor that
can dramatically improve your chances for a
successful construction or remodel project.
“Clearly know what your expectations are and
articulate them to a prospective contractor,”
he said. “Educating yourself before you start
construction is one of the best investments you
can make.”
