“I was really good friends with Beverly, the
owner of Antiques & Orchids,” recalls Heidi.
“I’d wander into her store and we’d talk about
life and careers. She was my mentor in life.”
Speaking of mentors, Heidi’s mom, Jody
Baldwin, was one of the first bed-andbreakfast
proprietors in Kula, Maui. In
fact, Jody’s New England-style house was
featured in the classic book, Under The
Hula Moon, published in 1992. Heidi’s
mom also started the company, Tiare
Style, which produces hand-drawn and
hand-painted “beach sheets,” bedding,
shams, tablecloths and more, all made of
100-percent cotton.
“She sold Maui beach sheets for years, and
now my sister has evolved the business,”
said Heidi. “Our mom grew up in Waikiki
and would bring a bed sheet to the beach
for sunbathing. She took that idea and came
up with Tahitian-style designs.”
Both bedrooms in the cottage showcase
custom beds made by Thomas Pratt, a
retired fireman from Hilo, who delivered
the beds to the house and put them
together on site. Topping the beds are
Jody’s beach sheets.
Heidi’s family is multi-generational from
Maui. Her grandmother lived at the fish
camps on Cod Fish Row. Her grandfather,
who was a sheriff on Maui, was pure
Chinese, born in the back of a little store in
Waikapu. After working as a registered nurse
at Maui Memorial, Heidi worked at North
Hawai‘i Community Hospital in Waimea.
Although her mom gave her a few good
tips on how to remodel the cottage, Heidi
singlehandedly made all the design and
renovations choices herself.
“My mom is just so impressed with the end
result,” said Heidi. “She also had fun meeting
the new neighbors. This neighborhood is so
old Hawai‘i. I just love the monkeypod trees
and the sound of the birds.”
