WITH A LITTLE COLOR
A woodworker, painter and musician, John
recently completed a 13 1/2 –foot-long
mango table built to the height of the lanai
rail. The eight-foot-wide lanai wraps around
the entirety of the home. He singlehandedly
constructed the impressive lava-rock walls
that surround the five-acre property—a
herculean feat considering that John is
in his 70s. To disguise the concrete, he
applied Lithochrome stain to the mortar and
transformed it into the color of rock.
Margaret grew up in Yosemite National Park
and learned from her grandmother and
mother how to live off the land and harvest
food. She is always concocting foods and
staple items made from plants that thrive on
the farm—everything from ulu flour, coconut
flour, vinegar, and sugar cane syrup to jams,
preserves, sauerkraut, hot sauce, pickled
lemons, and Kaffir lime & lavender soda. She
even makes her own cheese.
