 KITCHEN
o Ann Pastorino celebrated New Year’s
in style last week at her beautiful home
in Keauhou. And because her kitchen
 is designed for entertaining, festivities
abound in Jo Ann’s home all year ‘round.
A fi tness instructor at Pacifi c Island Fitness for 24
years and counting, Jo Ann prefers healthy cooking.
She also enjoys taking in the fabulous coastline
view when she’s in her kitchen. Both the stove and
 sink face the ocean.
“I love this kitchen,” said Jo Ann, whose late
husband John, a builder, completed the home
in 1992. “I’ve since updated it with the addition
of the bar and added new hidden cabinets
to conceal the old glass blocks. We installed
backsplash the entire height of a column. There
 are rounded corners everywhere.”
The layout of the kitchen and dining room
provided the perfect backdrop for Jo Ann’s 25thannual
 Christmas ornament exchange party in
December. A festive fundraiser she hosts with her
friends, the event raises money for the Hawai‘i
Island Humane Society’s Second Chance Fund.
“The Second Chance Fund helps sick animals at
the shelter that need surgery,” she said. “That’s
been my charity for the ornament party for the last
 fi ve years.”
Active in the Kona community, Jo Ann has always
been philanthropic. Each October at Pacifi c
Island Fitness, she hosts a free Pink Fitness boot
camp to raise awareness about breast cancer.
She has also participated in many Wahine
Fishing Tournaments through the years with
her costumed crew of sportfi shing friends. The
legendary tuna-can headdress from the Chicksof
the-Sea team hung for years at the cocktail bar
 at Huggo’s on the Rocks.
“The fi rst year, our team caught a biggest fi sh,”
said Jo Ann. “The second year, we won for best
costume. It was always a lot of fun.”
Jo Ann cherishes her life in Keauhou, especially
when daughter Kim comes to visit.
“We have an outdoor bathroom so the grandkids
don’t have to come inside the house from the
 pool,” she said. “It’s fantastic.”
