8 A la Carte The Panko Crusted Ahi Sashimi Roll is the most popular item on the Sansei menu. PHOTO COURTESY SANSEI SAM CHOY’S: Chef’s TV show has been picked up for another season Since its opening in 2011, Sam Choy’s Kai Lanai has become a landmark destination in the Kailua-Kona dining scene. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. Weekend breakfast buffets begin at 8 a.m. With a daily happy hour from 3 to 5 pm., the Short Bait Bar, designed like the stern of a boat, attracts patrons for sunset cocktails, televised sporting events, and an array of pupus including baby back ribs drizzled with coconut char siu glaze. The dinner and lunch menu exemplifies the restaurant’s “ocean-to-plate” dining experience that highlights fresh catch from Big Island waters. Sam’s popular Fish Trio features three types of fillet of fish prepared and seasoned in their own style. Although Sam’s parking lot is larger than it looks, overflow parking is a breeze when you can hitch a ride on one of Sam’s golf cart escorts. A resident of Kona, Sam often makes personal appearances at the Keauhou restaurant, greeting guests, checking out the daily specials or interacting with the kitchen staff. He has authored more than a dozen cookbooks and has appeared on numerous TV shows including Iron Chef America. Sam Choy’s TV show, “Sam Choy In The Kitchen,” which is broadcast on KHON Channel 2, has been picked up for another season. The show features Sam visiting residential kitchens to make crazy dishes with whatever is in the fridge at the time. Sam recently partnered with renowned tiki artist, Brad Parker, to produce a line of high-quality kitchen accessories including dishtowels, aprons, oven mitts, bar mops, scrubbers and more. The products feature signature tribal, tattoo-style motifs depicting tikis, roosters, lobsters, crabs and fish. ■ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 The grilled pork chop, regularly priced at $25.75, is the deal of the day for only $13.
