High surf continues on east-facing shores
A high surf warning
will remain in effect
for east-facing shores
through Thursday eve-
ning as waves build to
between 12 and 18 feet.
Swells will peak
Wednesday with elevat-
ed surf possible at least
through the weekend,
the National Weather
Service said.
The high surf has
been attributed to
hurricanes
Ignacio
and Jimena, which
are bypassing the Big
Island to the north and
east.
The weather service
said high surf could
flood beaches and
coastal roadways. It
also can create danger-
ous rip tides.
On Tuesday, large
waves prompted the
closure of Bayfront
Highway and several
beach parks in Hilo.
The closed parks
were Coconut Island,
Onekahakaha, James
Kealoha, Leileiwi and
Bayfront. Laupahoehoe
Boat Ramp also was
closed. The closures
could continue through
Wednesday depending
on conditions.
The
warning
is
set to lapse at 6 p.m.
Thursday, though the
weather service cau-
tioned this may be
extended.

Bush-Trump dispute intensifies, Bush hitting back harder
MIAMI — The feud
between Donald Trump
and Jeb Bush appears to
be intensifying.
Bush’s 2016 presi-
dential campaign put
out a video Tuesday
that shows old clips of
Trump talking more
like a Democrat than a
Republican.
And
while
cam-
paigning in Miami on
Tuesday, Bush said
Trump only resorts to
insults because he can’t
talk about issues.
“He
personalizes
everything,” Bush said.
“If you’re not totally in
agreement with him,
you’re an idiot, you’re
stupid, you have no
energy, blah, blah, blah.
That’s what he does.”
Trump tweeted in
response: “Yet anoth-
er weak hit by a can-
didate with a failing
campaign.”
The Bush campaign
video features clips from
interviews dating back
to 1999 when Trump
told NBC’s “Meet the
Press” that “I’m pro-
choice in every respect.”
In the segments, he
praises
Democrat
Hillary Rodham Clinton
as someone who would
“do a good job in negoti-
ating with Iran,” endors-
es a single-payer health
system and says: “You
would be shocked if I
said that, in many cases,
I probably identify more
as a Democrat.”
The video and Bush’s
sharper
comments
come as his poll num-
bers are down nation-
wide as well as in the
key early voting states.
Trump maintains a siz-
able lead over his rivals
in those polls.
“All we did today was
to put in his own words
that this man is not a
conservative,” Bush said.
“He’s backed Nancy
Pelosi. He’s given money
to Hillary Clinton.”
He added: “If you look
at his record and what
he believes, he supports
Democrats.”

Supporters of Iran deal near key vote total to back up Obama
WASHINGTON
—
Supporters of the Iran
nuclear deal are on the
cusp of clinching the
necessary Senate votes
to keep the contested
agreement alive and
hand President Barack
Obama a major foreign
policy victory, in spite of
furious opposition.
Democratic Sens. Bob
Casey of Pennsylvania
and Chris Coons of
Delaware on Tuesday
became
the
32nd
and 33rd senators to
announce support for
the deal, just one shy of
the 34 votes needed to
uphold an Obama veto
of Republican legislation
aimed at blocking the
agreement.
“This agreement will
substantially constrain
the
Iranian
nuclear
program for its duration,
and compared with all
realistic
alternatives,
it is the best option
available to us at this
time,” Casey said in a
statement. In remarks
at the University of
Delaware, Coons said:
“I will support this
agreement
despite
its flaws because it is
the better strategy for
the United States to
lead a coalesced global
community in containing
the spread of nuclear
weapons.”
