6-7 Thursday, August 3, 2017 NO BOUNDARIES Wailoa Center’s Abstract Only! exhibit to feature myriad media To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Wailoa Center, the 2017 Abstract Only! art exhibit will be on display Aug. 4-30, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the center. Sponsored by the Hawaii Island Art Alliance, this is the first year submissions were accepted from artists statewide. With several entries from Maui, the exhibit drew nearly 250 entries submitted by 104 artists. “After a very long deliberating process, 80 artworks represented by 72 artists were chosen for display with 11 of those entries coming from Maui,” says Wailoa Center director Codie King. “The Abstract Only! exhibit has become one of the most popular shows of our calendar year. More artists are participating and more visitors are coming to see it.” Recently, HIAA initiated an online entry system via ArtCall.org, making it possible for artists to enter their pieces for judging without having to commit to framing or transporting their work before it has been accepted. The juror for this year’s Abstract Only! exhibit is Hiroki Morinoue, who will have some of his own work displayed in the center’s Fountain Gallery as well. Morinoue is one of the founders and a volunteer artistic director of Holualoa Foundation for Arts & Culture, a nonprofit organization on the Big Island since 1994. He also is an instructor at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, the Donkey Mill Art Center on the Big Island, Honolulu Printmakers on Oahu and Hui Noe‘au Visual Arts Center on Maui.
