Voice of victims validates peace The University of Hawaii at Hilo Japanese Studies and Japanese Student Association present “Voice of Hiroshima: Peace Before and After the A-bomb,” featuring movies and a peace doll exhibition from 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday at UH-Hilo, Room UCB100. The event, which honors the 90th anniversary of peace doll exchanges between Japan and the United States, includes a lecture about peace movements between the nations before and after World War II and information about the peace doll exchange in 1927. Atomic-bomb movies from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum also will be screened as part of the program. The first is the documentary “Mother’s Prayer,” detailing a hibakusha (atomic-bomb victim) mother and daughter, who are suffering from atomic bomb sickness. The second movie, “On a Paper Crane,” is an anime film about a girl in Hiroshima who meets Sadako and tells her story about what happened after the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing. There also will be a peace doll and atomic-bomb victim “hibaku” tree display showcasing a peace doll from Courtesy photo Hiroshima that was sent to the area by some children from New York to promote friendship and peace between Japan and the U.S. Also look for a friendship doll from Izu Oshima, Japan. Masafumi Honda, the program director of Japanese studies and the chairman of the Department of Languages at UH-Hilo, explains that the memories of Aug. 6 bombing are extremely painful for the survivors, but many overcome their grief so they can tell others of their experience. They want to make it clear that nuclear weapons must never, under any circumstances, be used again.
