Hawaii Tribune-Herald MAXIMUM MANA’ Kamehameha Festival honors first king with abundance of cultural tradition By KATIE YOUNG YAMANAKA Special to the Tribune-Herald For members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Mamalahoa East Hawaii Chapter, Kamehameha Day is a significant occasion — a time to honor the first king of Hawaii and celebrate the culture of the Hawaiian people. This year’s Kamehameha Festival is from 10:45 a.m.- 4 p.m. Sunday at Mokuola (Coconut Island.) The schedule (subject to change) begins with the wehi (opening) at 10:45 a.m. followed by a performance by kumu hula Haunani Medeiros and Halau Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna at 11 a.m. At noon, the members of Mamalahoa will conduct their traditional ceremony, where the warriors of the East Hawaii chapter, dressed in full regalia, march across the bridge to Mokuola and accept hookupu to honor Kamehameha the Great.
