Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, June, 2017 3 Two Many Sopranos better than one The vocal duo Two Many Sopranos, composed of singers Amy Horst and Erin Smith, will bring their unique interpretations of classic songs as well as new favorites at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the East Hawaii Cultural Center. “Erin and I have wanted to perform together ever since we shared the stage at the Palace Theater’s Vaudeville Variety Show several years ago,” Horst says. “But our other performing commitments kept us from doing a concert together. This year, we were finally able to schedule it.” Horst and Smith, local stage and concert performers, also worked together in the Palace Theater’s production of “Mary Poppins,” where Horst played the title role and Smith played the lead role of Mrs. Banks. Both singers also performed to acclaim in Hilo as soloists — onstage and in concert. For this “Two Many Sopranos” concert, the duo will be joined by Walter Greenwood on piano along with local performer and drag queen Douglas Wayman, string player and orchestra leader Cathy Young, and members of the Orchid Isle Orchestra. “The concert itself came about as we talked about our favorite duets and solo numbers, and as we included key performers like Walter Greenwood, a truly world-class pianist who is so much more than just an accompanist,” Horst says. “He can create new arrangements of songs on the fly, and he sets the mood of each concert he plays. We were also thrilled that Doug Wayman agreed to join us.” Wayman will perform as himself and as the character “Janelle Nieman,” and he will be joined by Young, who created a string arrangement of “What Makes a Man,” specifically for Wayman. The evening’s program presents music for duet and solo voices with piano and with strings, showcasing the particular talents of each performer. From songs that might be new to the audience to beloved classics of stage and screen, the concert brings to life old favorites and new gems. With composers as varied as Stephen Sondheim and Bob Dylan, and songs such as “Pie Jesu” by local favorite Pedro Ka‘awaloa and “I Love a Piano” by Irving Berlin, this concert is for all music lovers, Horst says. “We particularly welcome folks who love a wide variety of vocal music sung in an intimate space with piano,” she says. “We also have an unusual element or two, including a viola solo. From soulful ballads to sparkling standards and lots of show tunes, this concert will have something for anyone looking for an enjoyable evening or afternoon of music.” Admission is $15 general, $10 for students and seniors.
