For 25 years the people of East Hawaii have gathered together once a year to honor those whose lives have been touched by cancer and to fi ght back. I love being a part of Relay in Hilo. There is something magical about the energy of thousands of people coming together with a common goal. Our Relay is fi lled with laughter and tears and hugs, with food and games and lots of walking. And Relay is fueled by heart and purpose. I am honored to be a member of the Relay family.” —Nancy Crawford 2017 Event Leadership Committee & 2017 Bark for Life Chair You can make a difference by forming a team, volunteering or becoming a sponsor or just by attending the event to support us for more information, please call 935-9763 or visit us on our website relayforlife.org/hilohi JOIN OUR TEAM TODAY! Hawaii Tribune-Herald Thursday, June 8, 2017 5 find the right person, so I waited. “Two years ago, I met Herb Mahelona, because I work at Kamehameha also as a substitute teacher. He read it, and he loved it and he loves the ‘Book of Esther’ also.” This is the debut production for Chun’s Shalom Players theater group. “The word ‘shalom’ doesn’t just mean ‘hello,’ ‘goodbye’ or ‘peace.’ It has to do with no parts missing, with being completely whole,” she said. “The mission is to provide quality theater with a positive and meaningful, relevant message through doing meaningful theater. “This is the first time Kamehameha Schools has allowed an independent theater group to rent its facility for a production.” The cast features 31 actors, singers and dancers ranging in age from 16 to 75. Esther, the queen and heroine, is played by Tenille Nagareda. Others in the cast include: Jackie Gomes as Rachel, Esther’s cousin; Daylan Blake-Kalai as King Ahasueurus; Ryder Furukado as Haman; Steve Schaefle as Mordecai; Dick Hershberger as the voice of God and Hegai, keeper of the Harem; and Norman Arancon as Haman’s inspiration. “Norman and Dick are the most seasoned actors in our cast, but we have people who are acting and singing for the first time and doing an amazing job,” Chun said. She called Furukado, who plays the villain Haman, “an amazing and an excellent talent.” “The cast, the actors, the music, the singing and the dancing are all excellent,” Chun concluded. “Even though it is a story from the Bible, it is a story that has a very relevant message today of a people being threatened by the forces of evil, and where people in that group, especially Esther and Mordecai, rise up with courage and faith to make a difference in their society.” Email John Burnett at jburnett@ hawaiitribune-herald.com.
