Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, March 23, 2017 3 By JOHN BURNETT Hawaii Tribune-Herald Steve Kimock is one of the finest improvisational guitarists to come out of the Bay Area jam-band scene, but four decades into a career that’s seen him take his place among the masters, he still describes himself as “a student of the guitar.” Once touted by Jerry Garcia as his “favorite unknown guitar player,” the Pennsylvania-born Kimock has performed as part of Bob Weir’s Kingfish and toured in 2007 and 2014 with RatDog, in addition to post-Grateful Dead ensembles including The Other Ones, Phil Lesh & Friends and the Rhythm Devils featuring Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. He also fronted the popular jazz-rock band Zero in the 1980s and KHVW in the ’90s. Steve Kimock and Friends, featuring keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, bassist Bobby Vega and drummer Wally Ingram, play tonight and Friday at the Blue Note in Honolulu, then come to the Big Island for a 7 p.m. show Saturday at Honokaa People’s Theatre. For thousands of years theyʼve wandered in and out of peopleʼs lives, becoming an essential part of the communities that make the city so rich. Claiming no owners, the cats live between two worlds, neither wild nor tame - and they bring joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. Village Voice: “In its own pleasantly dreamy and lilting way, the film embodies what it preaches: As life gets rougher, people endure not by hardening themselves even further but by continuing to find the freedom to be kind.” $8 Gen. - $7 Student/Senior 38 Haili St. • 934-7777 www.hilopalace.com PARADISE RESTAuRANT SuPPLY STILL OPEN - STILL STRONG OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK - 9:30 AM TO 5:00 PM LARGEST SELECTION OF PROFESSIONAL COOKWARE & SuPPLIES ON ISLAND WE DO KNIFE SHARPENING BACK IN STOCK STAINLESS STEEL TABLES LARGE SELECTION OF POTS, WOKS, MEAT GRINDERS 250 Kamehameha–Downtown hilo 808 - 933 - FORK (3675) Kimock to rock Honokaa Courtesy photo Improvisational guitarist Steve Kimock will be joined by friends Jeff Chimenti (keyboardist), Bobby Vega (bassist) and Wally Ingram (drummer) for a Big Island concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at Honokaa People’s Theatre. ‘Student of the guitar’ and friends to play People’s Theatre on Saturday See KIMOCK Page 4
