2 Thursday, March 23, 2017 Isabella Liu, 8, will perform Dmitry Kabalevsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Major, Opus 50, Movement No. 1” during the “Unstoppable Youth” concert Sunday at the Kahilu Theatre. ‘Unstoppable Youth’ rise to occasion The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra will conclude its 13th season with a concert featuring the winners of the orchestra’s Schatz-Harris Concerto Competition: Isabella Liu, 8; Jeremy Lee, 15; and Max Arakaki, 18. The concert, titled “Unstoppable Youth,” is slated for 4 p.m. Sunday at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. The three young soloists — two pianists and a clarinetist — will be accompanied by the orchestra during their performances. Isabella will perform Dmitry Kabalevsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Major, Opus 50, Movement No. 1,” Jeremy will play Frederic Chopin’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Opus 11, Movement No. 3” and Max will play Wolfgang Mozart’s “Concerto for Clarinet in A Major, K. 622, Movement No. 1.” Also on the program is another audience favorite, Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5.” “Each of these students are incredible young musicians,” says Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra artistic director Brian Dollinger. “They all strike me as very dedicated to their instruments as well as having the wondrous youthful spirit that is so infectious. “I think the most important thing for the audience to know about these young musicians is that these are Courtesy photo pieces performed by professional musicians. These are not ‘student pieces.’ They are the real deal and you’ll be blown away by the talent of our young winners.” Dollinger says the purpose of this concert is to give the state’s young musicians the opportunity to challenge themselves. “For me, it is the type of thing that musicians of every age dream about, and for these young musicians, their dreams are coming true in this performance,” he says.
