Hawaii Japanese Center hosting Kristi Yamaguchi book signing Olympic gold medalist and ice skating world champion Kristi Yamaguchi will visit the Hawaii Japanese Center to sign her latest illustrated children’s book, “Cara’s Kindness,” at noon Wednesday, Nov. 2. It’s the first time Yamaguchi, who has also penned two other children’s books — “Dream Big Little Pig” (2011) and “It’s a Big World, Little Pig!” (2012) — will hold a book signing anywhere in Hawaii. The HJC will open its doors at 11 a.m., and hardcover copies of “Cara’s Kindness” will be available for sale for $15. Yamaguchi also will speak briefly about her book and foundation at noon, followed by the book signing. “This book was just released two weeks ago,” Yamaguchi said during a phone interview last week while on her national book release tour. “Since this is the first time I’ve ever come out to do a signing in Hawaii, I’m really excited.” Yamaguchi also plans on doing a reading at E.B. de Silva Elementary School earlier that morning. Her books — “Dream Big Little Pig!” a story about never giving up, and “It’s a Big World, Little Pig!” a tale about the importance of embracing people’s differences — were both New York Times best-sellers. “Cara’s Kindness” introduces a new character: a cat struggling to pick the perfect song for her new ice skating routine. When a friend in need turns up at the rink, Cara drops everything to lend a helping hand. All she asks is that he pay it forward. “I thought that it was time to do something new,” says Yamaguchi about the character of Cara. “It was a nice change to freshen it up.” The book is illustrated by John Lee, a visual development artist and Oct. 27 2016 6.
