Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, October 27, 2016 5 Benefit Jazz & Blues Festival set The fourth annual East Hawaii Jazz & Blues Festival kicks off Sunday with a lineup of artists from around the country. Slated at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo, it’s the signature fundraiser for Hawaii Island Veterans, a nonprofit organization working to build a veterans complex near the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The group first began hosting a Sunday jazz gathering six years ago to raise awareness for their project which, when complete, will feature a veterans center, community outpatient clinic and affordable housing units. And just like a good jazz song, the Sunday gathering took on a life of its own. This year’s event features: • East Hawaii swing band Jazztones, featuring JP Thoma, Bub Pratt and Matt Spencer. • Former Ray Charles saxophonist Jeff Gaeth leads the Jeff Gaeth Quartet, featuring local musicians Trever Veilleux and Gonzo. • Austin-based blues guitarist and songwriter Ty Curtis accompanied by drummer Jerry Jacques and local musicians including Jeff Gray, Doug Espejo and Doc Miyashiro. • Seattle guitarist Tom McElroy, accompanied by the Hilo High School ’77 Rhythm Section, featuring Moon Brown on saxophone. • Singer Jessie Laine Powell of Lexington, Ky., making a return appearance after last year’s festival. • Soul on a Roll led by Hilo saxophonist Randy Skaggs, featuring guest singer Sarah Bethany. • Seattle-based pianist and composer Deems Tsutakawa, performing with Grammy- and Hoku-nominated artist Keahi Conjugacion, Honolulu saxophonist Fred Li and Honolulu guitarist Dave Yamasaki The festival begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday and continues until 6:30. Tickets are $60 in advance. A limited amount of $75 tickets will be available at the door. Festival organizer Steve Bader notes that last year’s event sold out. Included with each ticket is a pupu buffet, dessert station, wine- and beer-tasting and no-host bar. Tickets can be purchased at Basically Books in Hilo, Volcano Winery and Kiernan Music in Kona. They are available online at hawaiiislandveterans.org. The party continues into the evening with two events on Banyan Drive. Both are free of charge, with donations to benefit Hawaii Island Veterans. From 8-11 p.m., Ty Curtis and local blues guitarist Larry Dupio play the Wai‘oli Lounge of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. A “Smoking Jazz” jam session featuring festival artists as well as local musicians takes place 8:30-10:30 p.m. in the lobby bar and lounge of the Hilo Naniloa Hotel.
