Visitors and homebuyers rest assured: The Big Island is open for business
“Let the mainland know
we are open for business
and (that) we have
been welcoming visitors
since 1800,” said vice president Marie
Aguilar of Destination Kona Coast.
Misinformation about the recent
volcanic activity has run rampant
throughout the world and is already
costing the Big Island’s tourism industry,
as travelers are cancelling their
vacations to the state. Some out-ofstate
homebuyers are expressing concern
to their Real Estate agents, and
may take comfort in knowing that the
majority of the island is not in harm’s
way. Out of Hawaii Island’s 4,028
square miles (and still growing!), only
an area of less than 10 square miles
is impacted. While Civil Defense officials
continue to warn of elevated
SO2 levels throughout the districts of
Puna, Pahoa and areas downwind of
the summit, air quality throughout the
rest of the island remains largely as
it’s been for the past 10 years, since
the 2008 eruption.
Visitors and Homebuyers, rest assured;
while this recent eruption has
sparked interest near and far, lava has
been pouring out of Kilauea’s summit
since March of 2008; when a vent
opened in Halema‘uma‘u Crater at
the volcano’s summit. Kilauea’s recent
activity is creating fissures, or cracks,
in the ground with slow-moving rivers
of lava moving towards the ocean
through the subdivisions of Leilani
Estates and Lanipuna Gardens, located
within a small portion of the island’s
East Rift Zone. Kilauea is the youngest
and southeastern most
volcano on the Island
of Hawaii, and ranks
among the world’s
most active volcanoes-
some say it may even
top the list. USGS website
notes that “Since
1952 there have been
34 eruptions, and since January 1983
eruptive activity has been continuous
along the East Rift Zone. The Pu‘uʻO‘o
eruption began in 1983 and has added
over 400 new acres of land to the
island’s southeastern shore.”
However, residents of Puna are
going through a very difficult time.
40 structures have been destroyed,
and more than 1,500 evacuated. Kelly
Shaw, REALTOR® with Elite Pacific
Properties in Kailua–Kona is one of
many that has been volunteering and
coordinating relief efforts from Kona
for the community of Puna. “It has
been amazing to see the support and
outpouring of love being shown to
the people displaced or affected by
the eruption. The entire island community
is working together to support
each other with the belief that this too
shall pass… and that’s what makes
this community so special.” When
asked about her thoughts on the effects
of the Kona real estate market,
she noted, “The Kona real estate
market continues to flourish in spite
of volcanic activity in Puna. Most of
our island is protected from Kilauea’s
lava flow.”
