Manager Lonita Keala points out hiking gear at
the Hawaii Forest & Trail retail store, pictured
above, in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area.
Hawaii Forest & Trail,
which has expanded to several
locations across the
Big Island, began about as
inconspicuously as a business
can — out of Rob and Cindy
Pacheco’s Holualoa garage.
Hawaii Forest & Trail’s first
base of operations, guides
met at the garage to gear up
before heading out to the
hotels to pick up hikers and
venturing into the island’s
vast and unique array of
wilderness.
From the beginning,
Pacheco outfitted with quality
gear. As enamored as customers
were with the excursions,
their appetite for retail
exploded as much as for the
tours themselves.
So Pacheco moved
from his garage to a space
off Queen Kaahumanu
Highway, where he started
selling Tracks walking poles,
Mountainsmith backpacks
and Royal Robbins apparel.
“It’s just kind of grown
from there,” said Lonita
