It all began when Rob
Pacheco stepped off the
plane here in 1990. Without
knowing much about
Hawaii beforehand, he soon
discovered the islands were
one of the world’s greatest
natural history settings. The
story of it’s volcanic origins,
the colonization of life on
the remotest archipelago
on earth, the evolution of
those colonizers into new and
marvelous species and the
threats these native Hawaiian
species and systems now
face fueled his long held
passion for nature. And most
striking to him was how few
people knew these stories.
Trained as a naturalist on
the mainland he vowed to
be a voice for Hawaii nei.
Hawaii Forest & Trail was
born from a passion and
desire to share Hawaii’s
natural history. Fortunately,
a growing worldwide
interest in ecotourism
happened to coincide with
Pacheco’s arrival in Kona.
“We didn’t start out to be
a “hiking” company or an
“extreme adventure” outfit,
we started with the desire
to help our guests connect
to and love the Hawaii we
know and love.” “Our team
intentionally designs each
Hawaii Forest & Trail tour to
offer the best opportunity
for our guests to forge deep
connections to place. We
take them where they can’t
go and share with them what
they don’t know,” said Rob
Pacheco. “This has been our
vision for the past 25 years.”
Who doesn’t want to
explore private places far
away from the crowds?
Knowing this, Hawaii
Forest & Trail established
collaborative partnerships
with private and public
landowners to allow access
into previously inaccessible
landscapes teeming with
Hawaii’s beauty and stories.
Where else but Hawaii
Island can you experience the
soaring summit of Maunakea,
the sights, sounds and smells
of a tropical rain forest,
breathtaking waterfalls,
the tastes of local farms,
and incredible encounters
with the rarest plant and
bird species on earth?
Hawaii Forest and Trail has
crafted its menu of adventures
to suit a variety of tastes.
For some of the most
spectacular photo
opportunities book any
one of its waterfall tours.
For a sunrise experience
or a star gazing adventure
the Maunakea Summit
tours present two highly
customized offerings.
Foodies who want to taste,
see and touch many of the
island’s agricultural delicacies
will delight in the exotic fruits
and world-famous Kona coffee
on the various tours that visit
local farms and ranches.
“Our guests connect with
our guides, with Hawaii
Forest & Trail and with Hawaii
herself,” said Jason Cohn, Vice
President, Sales and Marketing.
“We’ll see guests go out on a
tour and book another offering
as soon as they return.”
Birders with a life list are
intensely interested in an
encounter with many of
the rare and endangered
bird species found here.
Hawaii Forest & Trail offers
its Hakalau Exclusive and
Endangered Native Habitats
Tours. Custom, private and
group bird tours are also
provided to those who may
want a specific experience.
The ongoing Kilauea eruption
has interrupted Hawaii Forest
& Trail’s popular volcano
tours. A newly designed Epic
Island Journey tour now offers
guests an off-road experience
through a private 150 year
old working cattle ranch
