container with bell-bottom pants,” he laughed.
Inside, a vaulted ceiling adds height and also
allows enough space to build a small loft if wanted.
Classy wainscot made of T1-11 plywood siding
complements the sheetrock walls and brings a
residential feel to the interiors. Hap also crafted
flared window trim in keeping with the Asian
theme.
“We’re working on another tiny home right now
that is 280 square feet with a loft. It will have
a Japanese feel to it with the tapered sides as
well. We go to HPM or Home Depot to get the
materials we need. I could have built these homes
out of salvaged material but I wanted to find out
what it would really cost to make one and keep it
in the $30,000 price range.”
Hap and his wife Mely are familiar with
repurposing salvaged architectural materials.
When the old Catholic church hall in nearby
Halaulu was slated for demolition, he rescued
the 1940s-era structure and transported it
