In baseball terms, it would be
scored e-Tribune-Herald.
We – or this reporter, to be specific –
committed an error and broke our own rule
prohibiting repeats winners in a calender year
when Kamehameha basketball standout Nalu
Kahapea was named Athlete of the Week for
a second time in late December, adding to the
accolade he pocketed back in January 2017,
Not to worry, however, since this third
annual recap of our Athletes of the Week
once again celebrates 52 special performers
since co-honorees (Saydee Aganus and
Chenoa Frederick) were selected in May.
Of the those 52, the breakdown goes like this:
31 from BIIF competition (Kamehameha had
eight, Hilo had seven and Waiakea six), seven
from UH-Hilo and 14 “other” – six youth baseball
players, two swimmers, two youth golfers,
a college baseball player, a strongman, one
mixed martial artist and one endurance runner.
As for Athlete of the Year, Hilo senior running
back Kahale Huddleston was a somewhat easy
selection in 2017 after his prolific season ended
in glory for the Vikings, who were crowned as
the Big Island’s first state football champion.
Also recognized on pages 6-7 are our honorable
mention Athletes of the Year: Waiakea
wunderkind Calvin Mattos, Konawaena
record-setter Austin Ewing, Keaau mat
pioneer Ivory Ayers and UFC top-15 middleweight
contender Brad Tavares.
