He spent his younger years on the Hanson Ranch in Colorado, moving to Oahu, Hawaii with parents and sisters during the late 1960’s. Relocating to Hawaii Island during his High School years, he spent his summers working in Ka’u with the Parker Ranch Paniolos and paddling Outrigger Canoes for Kawaihae Canoe Club. A er attending Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, CA, Evan returned to Hawaii and lived in Kona for many years. He made his living long-lining for Ahi and cutting wood. He divided his time between the mainland, Wyoming and Santa Ynez, California where he helped in the family cattle ranching business. Evan ultimately returned to his beloved Hawaii and Waipio Valley. He is survived by his two beautiful children Illona, her son Kioni Vete and Evan Jr., his parents, Don and Susie Hanson, his sisters Karen (Skip) Harry and Kristi (Bill) Parrish and his 5 nieces and nephews, and 3 great nieces. It’s been a journey, and Evan’s big heart and roaring laugh will be missed. Evan will be celebrated with a paddle out of Kawaihae Harbor on Sunday, March 20 at 11:00 am. Heavy snow will fall for a time over parts of Colorado. Much of the West will be dry. Toshio Shirai Toshio Shirai, 97, Captain Cook died Feb. 24, 2016, at Life Care Center of Kona. Born June 3, 1918, in Kapapala, Ka’u he was a retired commercial fisherman and coffee farmer, member of the Hanei Kumiai, the Hawaii Avocado Association, Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation, Kona Adult Day Center, Kona Historical Society, Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple and the Kona Kumamoto Kenjin Kai. Friends may call at 2 p.m. March 26 at the Kona Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Kealakekua for a 3 p.m. service. The family requests casual attire. He is survived by wife, Asayo Shirai of Captain Cook; sons, Ronald Shirai of Captain Cook, Lloyd (Lois) Shirai of Kealakekua; daughters, Lynn Shirai (Brian) Tanimoto, Janis Shirai, all of Hilo; brother, Takashi (Takako) Shirai of Honolulu; sisters, Mildred Arai, Shizue (Edwin) Asato, all of Hilo; four grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Born July 5, 1922, in Kohala, he was a retired owner of Veterans’ Service Station, a U.S. Army World War II veteran and member of the Hawi Jodo Mission.
