Hawaii Tribune-Herald The Big Island Substance Abuse Council will host its fourth annual Summer Jam, an event that highlights health and wellness, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-purpose Stadium. The drug-, alcohol- and smokefree event that builds awareness and raises funds for BISAC’s programs and services, features a Strongman competition in addition to food, a silent auction, live entertainment, rides for children and activities such as the keiki train and sticky wall, a health expo and a craft fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. “There will be more than 30 health fair vendors providing information, keiki-geared The national Strongman qualifier competition kicks off the day’s activities at 9 a.m. Courtesy photos games and much more,” says BISAC CEO Dr. Hannah Preston- Pita. “The aim is to provide free fun for the whole family.” The national Strongman qualifier competition sanctioned by the American Strongman Corp. starts off the day of activities at 9 a.m. Also testing the strength of men and women alike is a U.S. Armwrestling Associationsanctioned tournament, with separate divisions for both genders as well as novice and masters’ categories. The arm wrestling events will take place between Strongman events. “I wanted to add the event this year because it’s an up-and-coming sport in the nation and in the state of Hawaii,” Preston-Pita said. At press time, there were six competitors signed up for the event, but participants are welcome up until the start of the competition.
