Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, April 27, 2017 3 ‘Recovery, Resilience and ReCreation’ opens May 5 Self Discovery Through Art will host its second exhibit commemorating Mental Health Awareness Month from May 5-25 at the Wailoa Center. The show is called “Recovery, Resilience and ReCreation” of life worth living. It is an educational exhibit celebrating community mental wellness. The public is invited to a reception from 5-7 p.m. May 5, with musical entertainment provided by the band Alternative Medicine. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit will touch on subjects and questions confronting events that occur in our lives daily. How do people deal with difficult events that change their lives? The death of a loved one, loss of a job, serious illness and other traumatic events — these are all examples of challenging life experiences. Many people react to such circumstances with a flood of strong emotions and a sense of uncertainty. Yet people generally adapt well with time to life-changing situations and stressful conditions. What enables them to do so? The idea of “resilience” is an ongoing process that requires time and effort and engages people into taking action. Self Discovery Through Art has collaborated with many members of the community as well as artists. Selected artists were challenged to wrap their art perspective around the ideas of compassion, connection and contribution. These are all resilience factors necessary to overcome trauma. These artists include Ken Charon, Rebecca Rosen Charon, Ingrid Fregeau, Ed Goldstein, Elizabeth Miller, Ira Ono and Linda Rowell Stevens. Wailoa Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
