Palace playing it cool with Jazz Night Anew monthly event at the Palace Theater aims to draw a crowd of jazz enthusiasts to enjoy music from Hilo’s own progressive jazz band, Soul on a Roll. The first Jazz Night at the Palace takes place from 6-8 p.m. today in the theater lobby, featuring Randy Skaggs on saxophone, Walter Greenwood on organ, Brian Crist on bass and Michael Suprenant on drums. Skaggs, the band’s frontman, has played in every one of the Palace Theater’s fall musicals. Soul On A Roll also has been running a successful jazz night at Hilo Bay Café for two years. “This core group of musicians have been with me at all of our gigs,” Skaggs says. “Our set list is not easy. We play more challenging progressive jazz. People will hear a lot of my originals as well as songs they may have heard before but never get to hear live.” Skaggs, who also has been the band director at St. Joseph School for the past 23 years, says Soul On a Roll plays music from the postbop era, funk and jazz rock songs. “As executive director, I’m always looking for ways to use the theater on off nights,” says Morgen Bahurinsky of how the idea for Jazz Night at the Palace came to be. “I see how much jazz is being played around town and thought perhaps we have reached a place where we could host a jazz night and there would be enough patrons to support the cost of doing this. “When I suggested it to the board members and to the office staff, everyone was very excited.
