Hawaii Tribune-Herald Island Beat Thursday, January 26, 2017 11 Randy, and he was on board right away with ideas and suggestions.” Many people, she says, don’t always enjoy jazz music when they first hear it. “Then they hear that one song, that one group, and they are hooked,” Bahurinsky says. “It appeals to a wide age range. Jazz can be rowdy or soulful. It can be totally instrumental or include vocals. Our commitment to supporting local musicians reaches across all forms of performance types. I hope the interest in jazz has reached a point where we can provide a venue with a great band and a big crowd to applaud them.” Ticket sales have been doing well, but seating will be limited for this first-time event. “We hope to garner a following for these Jazz Nights at the Palace so we can hold them monthly,” she says. “When we have a large enough crowd, we will move from the lobby into the theater where the sound will be even better and there will be plenty of seats.” Adds Skaggs, “It’s a nice couple of hours out on a weeknight. The Palace Theater is one of those places that has really fostered and nurtured a lot of talent in Hilo. This is just another way of giving the community an opportunity to enjoy some of the arts. There’s nothing like live music. We need to keep it alive.” The Palace Theater hosted one jazz night in 2015 where they showed a film about women jazz performers, and a group of local female jazz musicians played in the lobby after the film. “It was well-attended and we had positive feedback that everyone really liked it and would love to see more music in the lobby,” Bahurinsky says. She explains that the Palace Theater is geared to live performances and isn’t looking to operate as a bar or a tavern. However, they hosted a lobby event with the Hawaii Performing Arts previously and the lobby was filled. “We hope to do the same (with this event)” she says. “We plan to serve beer and wine to make it sort of a nightclub setting.” The Palace Café also will be open with special menu items, including slow-cooked Palace mac and cheese for $5, deluxe cheese nachos with tomatoes, jalapenos and sour cream for $5 and freshly made crunchy pea salad for $3.50. “This is a special menu in addition to our regular offerings in our café. This could (potentially) lead to permanent menu additions for all of Courtesy photo our live events. Getting a onetime liquor license could lead to a permanent license as we are often asked if a patron can purchase beer or wine for an event.” Bahurinsky says they plan to run Jazz Night at the Palace once a month through April and then suspend the event during the hot summer months. “That will give us time to evaluate and see if we have created a new jazz venue,” she says. Admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased at the box office from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday or by phone with a credit card at 934-7010. The group “Soul on a Roll” will be featured tonight at the Palace Theater. JAZZ From page 2
