4 Thursday, August 27, 2015 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald Grammy winner Rowan plays Kona, Hilo By JOHN BURNETT Hawaii Tribune-Herald You may not know the name Peter Rowan, but bet your bottom dollar you’ve heard his music. The Grammy winner and six-time nominee played with bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, was part of the band Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements and John Kahn, and during that time penned the New Riders of the Purple Sage’s hit, “Panama Red.” The 73-year-old Massachusetts native is playing a pair of intimate Big Island concerts. The first is at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Kona’s Aloha Theater. Then, at 7 p.m. Saturday, he’ll play the Polynesian Room at the Hilo Naniloa Hotel. Tickets for both shows are $25 general, $45 gold circle, available at Hilo Guitars, Hilo Naniloa front desk, CD Wizard and Hilo Music Exchange in Hilo; Taro Patch Gifts in Honokaa; Waimea General Store in Parker Square; Sound Wave Music in Kailua-Kona; and Aloha Theater and Kiernan Music in Kainaliu; by calling 896-4845; and online at www.lazarbear.com. Rowan spends a considerable amount of time in Hawaii, and told the Tribune Herald he’s been recording in Honolulu with ukuleleist Doug Tolentino and steel guitarist Jeff Au Hoy. He noted a close kinship between Hawaiian music and the folk and bluegrass he’s known for. “The first music I heard as a kid, my uncle Jimmy came back from World War II with a ukulele. He won it in a poker game in Honolulu, and he used to play this thing all the time,” Rowan said. “Uncle Photo by Ronald Rietman See ROWAN Page 5 Peter Rowan will play two concerts this weekend.
