10 Thursday, August 27, 2015 Island Beat Hawaii Tribune-Herald Some of the world’s finest performers of music and dance once again have Hilo in their travel plans. They will take part in the Hawai‘i Concert Society’s 2015-16 season, its 54th, which begins next month and runs until May 2016. The season was announced at the annual membership meeting of the Hawai‘i Concert Society on Aug. 16. Seven concerts have been scheduled, all at the UH-Hilo Performing Arts Center and all starting at 7:30 p.m. The international artists who will perform range from those who are already acknowledged as some of the world’s greatest, to gifted young artists who are just beginning to achieve international recognition. The season-opening concert Sept. 24 by Fandango (flute, guitar, violin and cello) will be a tangy mix of Latin, Spanish, Sephardic, Balkan and classical sounds. It will be followed Oct. 20 by a highly lauded continuation of the Czech string quartet tradition in the form of the young but experienced Zemlinsky String Quartet. After unsuccessful attempts in previous years, the Hawai‘i Concert Society finally has succeeded in engaging the captivating young violinist Tessa Lark, who has been praised by critics and audiences alike for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility and musical elegance. She will perform March 16, 2016. Lovers of classical piano should also look forward to the new year. On Jan. 20, the society once again will present Van Cliburn award-winner and island favorite, Jon Nakamatsu, this time performing not as a soloist, but with Honolulu’s Spring Wind Quintet. And, as the final concert of the season May 10, it will present two talented artists, Soyeon Lee and Ran Dank, in a concert of solo and four-hands Hawai‘i Concert Society unveils season lineup music. The new year also includes evenings of song and dance. On Feb. 3, Hawaii Opera Theatre will be in Hilo for a gala concert featuring favorite selections from opera and Broadway. Four weeks later, on March 1, Juan Siddi Flamenco, complete with 13 dancers, musicians and singers, will immerse the audience in the passionate and disciplined world of the centuries-old Spanish art form. The flamenco performance is co-presented by the concert society and the University of Hawaii Hilo Performing Arts Center. The season brochure providing additional information is available now. As in the past, season tickets can be ordered using the form in the brochure, or by using the order form at www.hawaiiconcertsociety.com. Full season tickets are $144 for general admission, $116 for seniors (ages 60 and older), and $57 for students. Each is a 20 percent savings off box-office prices. Ticket orders for any custom-designed mini-series of at least four concerts also can be specified and are available at reduced prices. The brochure, which has been mailed to past and present society members, previous season ticket holders and a large number of Hilo residents and businesses, is available at the East Hawaii Cultural Center or by calling 959-4064. To obtain tickets by return mail before the first concert, orders should be received on or before Sept. 12. Otherwise they can be picked up at the box office the evening of the first concert. The Hawai‘i Concert Society acknowledges it members and corporate sponsors, and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts for helping to make the 2015-16 season possible.
