Holiday Happenings 14 MAKING A LIST NOVEMBER 23, 2017 | WEST HAWAII TODAY Catch a parade Give back The 57th annual Waimea Christmas Twilight Parade takes place 5:30-6:45 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Waimea. This year’s theme is “Truckers Light The Town,” honoring Waimea’s beloved truckers who are always a featured part of the parade. The parade begins at the east end of Church Row Park, onto Mamalahoa Highway through town, right onto Lindsey Road at the main intersection passing Parker School and ending at Waimea Park. Info: www.waimeatown.org. The 24th annual Charity Trees at Mauna Lani benefiting local nonprofit organizations begins Dec. 8 at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows in South Kohala. The trees will be on display in the hotel lobby through Dec. 28. In addition to raising funds, the trees also bring awareness to the organizations and their efforts. Community members, resort guests, employees and friends and family are invited to view the entries and vote for their favorite tree, for a $1 donation per vote. Winners will be announced Dec. 22. Dec. 1 is the entry deadline for organizations. All for-profit organizations must designate a charity to receive their donation. West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy lights up the holidays by presenting “The Nutcracker Ballet” in December. The holiday classic is performed at 6 p.m. on Dec. 21-22 and 2 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Kahilu Theatre in Waimea. A full orchestra under the baton of Maestro Brian Dollinger with members of the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany the dancers. A Silent Auction and Nutcracker Boutique will be held in the lobby. Proceeds benefit nonprofit WHDT’s ongoing programs, scholarship fund, and studio renovations. Tickets range in price from $23-$38 and can be purchased online at www.kahilutheatre. org. The 33rd annual Kailua-Kona Community Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9, starting at 5 p.m. It will begin at Kona’s Kekuaokalani Gymnasium next to Kona Aquatics Center. From there, it will proceed south on Kuakini Highway, down Palani Road, and along Alii Drive to Walua Road, just past Coconut Grove Marketplace. The parade theme this year is “The Magic of Christmas Kona Style!” Grand marshal of the parade will be Bo Campos, also known as “Uncle Bo.” Campos is president of the Kai Opua Canoe Club and race commissioner of the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association.
