and a licensed real estate salesperson?
What do all those letters behind
someone’s name really mean?
Answer: A licensed real estate salesperson
may or may not be a member
of the National Association of REALTORS
®. If they are, then this is what
sets that person apart from
other real estate sales people.
How will you know if a salesperson
is a REALTOR® or not?
REALTORS® are allowed to
use the REALTOR® registered
trademark in their advertising
and in printed materials.
A REALTOR® has access
to the resources of three
professional trade organizations
on the local, state and
national level. These organizations
require their members
to adhere to a strict more
than 100-year-old code of
ethics designed to protect the
profession and the consumer.
REALTORS® must meet
continuing education requirements
to maintain an active
real estate license and to
remain relevant in an everchanging
market. Some REALTORS
® go further in their
training and earn specialty
designations. For example - if
you are looking to work with
someone who specializes in
buyer representation, then
you might focus on agents
with the Accredited Buyer’s
Representative (ABR) designation.
You will know if a
REALTOR® has done specialty
training if they have acronyms
listed after their name.
REALTORS® and REALTOR
® Associations are active
in their local communities
and take pride in helping
others by collecting and giving
donations, participating in
beach cleanups, fundraising,
and much more.
In fact, on June 29,
REALTOR® members of the
West Hawaii Association of
Realtor®s (WHAR) volunteered
their time and collected donations
for the ongoing volcano relief efforts
in Puna. A day was spent helping at
Pu‘uhonua o Puna (“The Hub’) where
affected residents are provided a hot
meal, can pick up various supplies
(tents, clothes, toiletries, food, clothes
etc.) and get information on local, state
and national relief options. The Hawaii
Island REALTOR® Association received
a $150,000 grant from the National Association
of REALTORS® Relief Fund.
Applicants may apply for one-month
relief of a rent or mortgage payment.

Working with a REALTOR® provides
a buyer or seller with many
benefits. REALTORS® offer unemotional
negotiation skills, marketing expertise,
security of your property and
your confidential information, pricing
strategies, help with the extensive
paperwork involved in a transaction,
and provide support long after closing.
REALTORS® who belong to the
National Association of REALTORS®
have extensive industry connections
and, on average, net 25% more than
a licensed real estate person. To learn
