Renewable Energy
Services, Inc., (RES) has
been designing, installing
and maintaining Solar (PV)
Electrical Systems since
1992. Back in those early
days all PV systems powered
off grid homes with
sunlight and batteries. RES
founder, Peter Shackelford,
used his experience working
as an engineering technician
for the Hawaii Natural
Energy Institute (HNEI)
and the Pacific International
Center for High Technology
Research (PICHTR) to
design reliable residential
power systems built around
the best technology available
at the time.
Backed up by customer
care and professional service,
the company has grown to 15
full time employees including
Peter’s son Roland who was
the first Kama’aina to earn
the National Association
of Board Certified Energy
Practitioners (NABCEP) certification
in Solar PV Energy
Systems, and the current vice
president of the company.
With the advent of Net
Metering, RES added
grid connected solar systems
to their offering and
has installed hundreds of
residential and commercial
PV systems connected to the
grid as well as continuing
their off grid work.
Today with the closing of
Net Metering, Shackelford
sees the industry turning
full circle back to the days
when a battery was an integral
part of every solar power
system. “Now even owners of
grid connected solar systems
will need to manage their
solar energy with a battery,”
Shackelford says. “It only
makes sense that distributed
solar generation should be
combined with distributed
storage (batteries) as a means
of modernizing the way the
grid works in the future.”
New HELCO rules discourage
and often disallow
exporting solar energy into
the grid and that is where the
battery comes in. Customers
can harvest solar energy on
their roof, store it in their
battery during the day for use
later at night and keep the
grid connection for cloudy
times when the sun isn’t
enough. Time of Use (TOU)
rates, which are just around
the corner, will make the economics
of home solar storage
even more attractive.
Given their long history
with battery based PV systems,
Shackelford and the
RES team are well positioned
to understand the new
HELCO rules and the dizzying
array of new high tech
batteries that are now available.
Storage components
from Sonnen, Blue Ion and
Pika are some of the exciting
new products that RES
is using in today's Solar with
Storage systems. RES has
tested each of the new technologies
they represent today
and offers the same customer
care and professional backup
for today's systems as in
the past.
RES is passionate about
the benefits of Solar Power
with Storage and committed
to its safe and artful use on
Hawaii Island today and for
generations to come. Visit
