Craftsman-Style Bungalow in Hawi Harkens

nspired by the bygone-era bungalow
houses of Hanalei Bay, a nostalgically
appointed residence in Hawi pays
homage to traditional Hawai‘i
architecture and design.
Collaborating with the homeowners to achieve
their vision, interior designer Sue Moss, of Trans-
Pacifi c Design in Waimea, spearheaded the totality
of the interior space from the start of the home’s
construction to completion. Quality Builders, also
of Waimea, were the general contractors.
“The client loves colors and wanted the
feeling of the ocean inside their home,”
said Sue. “We showed them photos of older
Hawaiian bungalow homes to see if that was
the direction they wanted to go in. They were
very fun to work with and were into every
aspect of it. This was a personalized retro-
Hawai‘i bungalow look and we went all out for
it. I just love the house.”
With ocean views of Maui in the distance, the
compound is divided into three separate pods
that include a main living area, the master suite,
and a guest suite with two bedrooms, two baths
and a central living room. Each of the pods feature
Lithochrome acid-stained concrete fl oors in
customized colors. Setting the stage in the kitchen,
turquoise concrete fl oors convey a tropical ocean
look. Sue Moss explains the process:
